A moderate earthquake Friday night reminded Coachella Valley residents they live in earthquake territory.
The magnitude-4.2 quake centered in Joshua Tree National Park rattled residents at 10:11 p.m.
The not-so-gentle temblor was about 11 miles north of Indio.
No damage was immediately reported, police said, though windows shook a bit.
Betty Maxwell of Palm Springs was at home with her cat when the quake hit.
A native Californian who has lived in the Coachella Valley for 14 years, Maxwell said she was surprised by the event because it "was different from any others" she had been through.
"I've been through some bad ones. But this was different. The shaking was different," she said. "Usually, it rumbles through, but this one was kind of up and down.
"I didn't even know it was a quake at first. My cat got startled. But there was no damage for me," she said.
"It didn't roll like the past quakes I've felt. It was a loud rocking jolt
