EUREKA, Calif.—An earthquake hit off the coast of Humboldt County Tuesday evening, but was apparently unnoticed by area residents.

HOLLY NOTE: There's something brewing in southern Calif. too. Look at the concentration of events just north of the border. A day ago there were several hundred fewer quakes on this map.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a quake with a magnitude 3.9 4.1 (upgraded by USGS) was recorded 56 miles west of Eureka around 6:16 p.m. Tuesday.

A dispatcher for the Eureka Police Department said police have not received any calls about the quake.

The dispatcher said the earthquake was not felt at the department's dispatch center.
