Millennium Ark: Hot News

It's doubtful this swarm just west of the Caldera is anything to worry about as these quakes are all small magnitude, but it bears watching especially in light of Yellowstone's explosive history. Interestingly this latest swarm is at the site of the newest vent. These formations don't have to occur within a caldera's rim. It could indicate that Yellowstone is growing or that activity associated with this volcano extends beyond the caldera (a volcano that falls in on itself after erupting) itself. Below you can see that the Yellowstone Caldera covers a massive area roughly 35 miles wide by 50 miles long. Each explosion changed the caldera's shape and the red ring shows it as it is today. Notably, the last explosion, while not the biggest, threw ash the furthest creating the Lava Creek ash bed, which covered half of CONUS. See image right. In light of Yellowstone's past three catastrophic eruptions, it puts into perspective why she has earned the title of 'supervolcano'.
