Farmers Continue to Suffer, Drought Fears Nag in 3rd Year
Agricultural Fires Swarm Across Mexico, Prepares Land for Pasture but Degrades Air Quality – HOLLY NOTE: Keep in mind that America imports a considerable amount of produce from Mexico. Between this, the fires in California (America's fruit and veggie belt) and soggy dramas in the Midwest blocking the planting of wheat, corn and soybeans, all signs point to high food prices this year. We laid in a supply of freeze dried foods for proteins, dairy and things we can't grow. For the rest, we have gardens underway as we have for the last 15 years. This year we grew tomatoes in the kitchen and didn't have to buy a single crummy tasteless cardboard tomato all winter. Our neighbors love us for sharing with them, and they are now doing their own garden thing by following the easy organic instructions in Garden Gold and taking advantage of its resources for over 175 non-hybrid, open pollinated and organic seeds. Besides giving you the ultimate in healthful foods, it lets you give a poke in the eye to Monsanto and other conglomerates whose sole aim is to exterminate all "free" non-hybrid seeds. Get your own 'seed vault' going while you can.

As Honeybee Numbers Drop, U.S. Sees Threat to Food Supply – HOLLY NOTE: To entice honeybees and other pollinators to your garden, plant flowers that entice them. Here are some suggestions: basil, bee balm, borage, catnip, cornflower, dill, Echinacea, evening primrose, fennel, goldenrod, horehound, hyssop, lavender, parsley, poppy, thyme and sage, Bachelor's button, black-eyed Susan, butterfly bush, clematis, coreopsis, dame's rocket, foxglove, goldenrod, heliotrope, hydrangea, lantana, larkspur, Mexican hat, penstemons, plumbago, rose of Sharon, salvia, sweet William, yarrow, zinnias. (Source: Garden Gold)

This spring differs from all others in that at least 50 bees committed suicide for no reason 2 weeks ago in our front yard pond. A couple days later another dozen drowned in our dogs' water bowl in the backyard. This is a first. Though there are still plenty of bees to pollinate crops, this is a disturbing development.

Raw Honey: Liquid Gold in Your Pantry – HOLLY NOTE: One honey product Stan and I would not be without is Medihoney. Its Antibacterial Wound Gel performs healing miracles as well as being effective against MRSA. If you choose to buy some other product, make sure it contains Manuka honey from New Zealand. Look for "UMF" on the box, which indicates it contains enough Manuka to kill bacteria. We used to have to import ours from New Zealand, but you can buy it here. US: 1.800.825.4325, Canada: 1.800.387.5302. Other countries, go here.
EPA: Most US Rivers Unable to Sustain Life – HOLLY NOTE: It's now essential that everyone have a dependable water filtration system. Should NKorea, China, Iran or some other country succeed again in hacking our infrastructure, we may all be forced to drink from sources we never before considered when stored water runs out. We have 4 Berkeys and they perform perfectly using unsurpassed filtering technology. Go with the best!

America Lost 11,630 Farms in 2012 – HOLLY NOTE: This raised the warning hairs on the back of my neck like nothing else of late. These lost farms sit on roughly 3,000,000 acres, about the size of Connecticut. While we still have 2.2 million large and small farms in America, this is a huge loss. Imagine these losses every year and the impact to your wallet in terms of food costs and lack of availability. The implications become rapidly apparent. Like drought, this is not an 'exciting' topic, but it will have long-ranging impact on all of us. No surprise, massive corporate farms were largely immune, but the small, independent farmer that cares more about good health, growing non-GMO crops and more healthier foods are being shut out. These losses, in addition to the higher costs of farming, Monsanto's suffocating grip on seeds while buying up non-hybrids and patenting them, escalating bad weather killing crops and herds (which affects meat availability), are combining to bring a nasty shock in food prices and making available only the less healthful foods to most of Americans. This is an explosive 'volcano' in the making. The time to purchase storable foods – especially proteins – is now.

Letter Re: Food Storage in the Southern United States – HOLLY NOTE: This was essentially what we had in Victoria, Australia. It was underground and made of 8" of poured concrete with feet of dirt over the top and sides. It was grassed over with a waterfall over the front that recirculated into a fish-stocked pond. It kept the food cool and safe and was a useful backdrop to a beautiful water feature. Details in Dare To Prepare.

Vegetable Gardening in Drought or Dry Climates – HOLLY NOTE: Stan and I grew tomatoes indoors this winter. Not only was there a 'whiff of spring' every time you entered the kitchen, but it's kept us in tasty, not 'cardboard', tomatoes all winter long. This spring we'll transplant them outside and be way ahead of the game. Container veggies are a great way to go if rain is in short supply. Check this article for some other great water-conserving ideas. We're planning this year's garden now, since for many places, Spring will come early. Our Fuji fruit tree already has fuzzy 'knobs'.

How Is the U.S. Drought Affecting Crops? – HOLLY NOTE: The next 45 days are critical for rain and the outlook is dire. Roughly HALF of CONUS is forecast to experience the worst drought conditions for the foreseeable future. This may not be 'exciting' news, but it's important to every single person. Expect ALL products containing wheat and corn to jump in price. Corn will fare no better than wheat and farmers are considering NOT even planting this Spring as indicated in this interview. Drought is the most under-rated challenge. It directly affects your bank account on many levels, food production, availability of recreational activities, businesses, food transport, and what you see in grocery stores. Drought is the biggest disaster people experience in the long run. It is the deadliest disaster with the longest-reaching tentacles, and the most costly AND most significantly, the one people least prepare for. Stock up on freeze-dried foods before these producers get socked with higher costs, this, and having your own garden will slash your grocery bills.
