Onion Shortage Signals Threat Of Global Food Crisis – HOLLY NOTE: Last year we planted a lot of onions and had plenty for all of our neighbors. Still have at least 50. This year we cut back to 90. Harvested last year's in October and 7 months later, we still haven't had to buy any.

For the last 5 years, we've exclusively used Dixondale Farm's onion sets and there is a difference. They grow really big. Here's a sample of one picked last October. This scale is 6" across. Remember, when you harvest onions, don't wash them and leave on the outer papery skin until ready to use. This is Dixondale's free planting guide.

You don't have to use their fertilizer, but make sure yours is 10-20-10. Plant no deeper than 2" as more inhibits bulbing. The only thing we deviate from is closeness. I make the fertilizer trench just 4" wide instead of the recommended 6".

Tip: We don't hang harvested onions. Too much trouble. Instead, we dry them outside for 3 days, then put them loosely in boxes, root-side up.

I look at this chart that lists for every U.S. county the 90%, 50% and 10% probability of no more frosts and compare that to local forecasts. Always punt at the 50% date of April 30.
