Nuclear Reactors - World Maps
Nuclear Tidbits from International Status of Nuclear Power
- The first commercial nuclear power stations started operation
in the 1950s.
- There are now 436 commercial nuclear reactors in 32 countries,
supplying 16% of the world's electricity, and their efficiency
is increasing.
- They produce the equivalent of over twelve times Australia's total
electricity, as base-load power.
- 59 countries operate a total of 273 research reactors.
- Canada is the world's leading supplier of uranium.
- Today, only eight countries are known to have some nuclear weapons
capability, 59 have civil research reactors operating, and 32
countries have a total of 436 commercial nuclear power reactors
producing electricity. A further 30 commercial power reactors
are under construction.
- Eighteen countries derive at least a quarter of their electricity
from nuclear power. France gets more than three quarters of its
power from nuclear energy, while Belgium, Bulgaria, Lithuania,
Slovakia, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine get 40%
or more from nuclear.
